Behind the Scenes: Photographing Michael
Now 54, Mr. Scales is the co-owner of the HSP Archive, based in Harlem, with his wife, Meg Henson. He has been a photo editor at The Times since 1998.
“What I see in these pictures today,” he said, “is that you’re looking at this young man whose entire life had been spent as a big star. He never really had a childhood.”
